Breastfeeding Mo. Mother Charged with Contempt
LEE'S SUMMIT (AP) - A breastfeeding Missouri mother has been charged with contempt of court after refusing to leave her son behind for jury duty.
KCTV reports that Laura Trickle is facing a fine of up to $500. She has a hearing date Thursday in Jackson County court.
Trickle says her 7-month-old son, Axel Graham, has to be with her to eat. She brought Axel along when she appeared for jury selection, hoping the judge would grant an exemption.
Instead the judge told her she could pump on breaks or bring someone along to care for Axel so she could nurse him on breaks. She says neither option works. Her son doesn't take a bottle, and because she's a stay-at-home mom, she doesn't have a child care provider.
Trickle calls the situation "scary."
