Bridge maintenance continues on U.S. Route 54
JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Department of Transportation continued bridge maintenance Wednesday over the Missouri River on U.S. Route 54 and 63.
The project involves reinforcing the structural integrity of the bridge's piers.
The maintenance measures include placing filter bags and boulders and the base of the piers to prevent any further scouring and erosion.
8,000lbs filter bags are carefully placed around the base using sonar technology. Once the massive bags are laid two layers high, workers piled on thousands of pounds of rocks.
MoDoT engineer Patty Lemongelli said, "It is an opportune time to go in and fix it."
Lemongelli said, "The scouring and erosion has occurred, however, it has not threatened the integrity, but probably if it were not addressed over time it would just scour out more and would eventually become a concern."
The cost of the project will be around $1.5 million. The maintenance is set to be finished by the start of November.
