Callaway County teenager charged in connection with deadly drug overdose
FULTON - Prosecutors in Callaway County filed charges against a teenager on July 24 in connection with a deadly drug overdose in May.
Robert Thomas, 16, faces two counts of distributing a controlled substance in a protected location; in this case, the alleged crimes happened at the Noren River Access of the Missouri River, a public park.
According to court documents, on May 6, deputies responded to a home on County Road 4012 in Holts Summit for a death investigation. They found a juvenile had died from an overdose of oxycodone.
Deputies determined the victim had gotten the pills from another juvenile, who apparently got them from Thomas while at the Noren River Access. Other juveniles told deputies the victim also stole some pills from Thomas.
At some point, the victim reportedly told others he had taken the pills he got from Thomas, but wasn't sure what he'd taken. One of the juveniles looked them up and determined they were oxycodone.
Based on interviews, deputies determined the victim took a total of five pills gotten from Thomas either directly or through someone else.
Thomas later reportedly admitted to deputies he gave pills to several juveniles at the Noren River Access on May 6. He said he had gotten the pills from someone else, who told authorities he took them from his stepmother.
A judge certified Thomas to stand trial as an adult on July 24.
