COLUMBIA - A Canadian contract research company will open a new clinical facility in Columbia next year.

Toronto based BioPharma Services Inc. announced the plan to open a 9,000 square foot facility at 300 Portland St. The facility will hold 48 beds, but it could expand to 24,000 square feet and hold 140 beds.

This will be BioPharma's first clinical facility in the United States.

"We are excited to welcome BioPharma Services Inc. to Columbia. The health care industry is an important part of Columbia's economy and this Phase 1 Clinical Trials site adds another element to our growing medical cluster," Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid said in a statement.

The facility is expected to be ready for operations by March 2014.

The new site in Columbia will complement the company's 174 bed facility in Toronto.

"We are excited about our growth strategies. Our new clinic in Columbia, Missouri, will be a world class facility able to meet the growing needs of our US and global clients," Renzo DiCarlo, CEO of BioPharma Services Inc. said in a statement.
