Canopy Clearing Leads to New Look
Some shops on the north side of Broadway are considering identical awnings to replace the concrete canopy. Businesses also are patching holes left by the canopies.
"We've given them not just regulations, not just to help figure out what they want to do with their buildings, but we're giving them free, historic preservation assistance as well," said Carrie Gartner, director of the Special Business District. "We've got a consultant on board who's working with all the owners and merchants on this."
Businesses also are working with the city on a proposed law to allow, among other things, portable or painted signs. If the Columbia City Council passes the law, it will affect only new, not existing, signs.
