PHILADELPHIA - Tommy Pham went deep twice Wednesday night and the Cardinals bullpen allowed only one earned run as St. Louis rallied to overcome the Phillies 7-6. The Cardinals were able to secure the win despite three errors throughout the game.

The Phillies came out of the gates swinging in this game. After 3B Maikel Franco brought home LF Howie Kendrick via a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first, CF Odubel Herrera was right behind him with a two-RBI double to deep center. That made the score 3-0 in favor of the Phillies just one inning into the game.

Cardinals SP Michael Wacha would get a bit more comfortable on the bump after the first inning, allowing no more runs until midway through the bottom of the fourth. Phillies OF Aaron Altherr grounded into a fielder's choice allowing C Andrew Knapp to score. The damage would have been limited to a trade-off of one run for one out, but a throwing error by Cardinals 2B Greg Garcia allowed another run to score. The lead had now ballooned to 5-0 Phillies.

Wacha would end the night with a line of four innings pitched, nine hits and two earned runs.

The Cardinals batters must have had enough. Pham led-off the fifth inning with a solo home run to center, but the Birds still had a long way to go, staring at a 5-1 deficit. That deficit would begin to look more manageable as the Cards continued to pour it on.

Third baseman Jedd Gyorko slapped a two-run long-ball to right an inning later to bring the Cardinals within two at a score of 5-3. This would knock Philadelphia SP Nick Pivetta out of the game after six innings of three-run ball, earning him a quality start. The Phillies bullpen couldn't stop the bleeding.

In the top of the eighth inning, OF José Martinez struck a ball well that sailed into the seats in right for a solo home run, making the score 5-4.

While the Cardinal hitters were doing all they could to get their team back into the game, the bullpen was holding up their end of the bargain as well. Tyler Lyons, who relieved Wacha, blanked the Phillies for three innings and struck out five.

With the Cardinals still needing one run to avoid a loss, Pham dug in once again in the top of the ninth inning. He got hold of a pitch and drove it over the fence in center, tying the game at five. With the Phillies unable to respond in the bottom half of the frame, these clubs went into extras for the second night in a row.

Martinez led-off the inning for the Cardinals and was able to reach base on a double to center, he advanced to third on a balk by Phillies RP Edubray Ramos. Ramos would give the Cards another gift two batters later when he attempted to pick off a runner at first but sailed the ball to the home dugout, allowing Martinez to score the go-ahead run on the error.

The Cardinals would get one more run in the top of the tenth to push the lead to 7-5 and while the Phillies would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the tenth, they came up one run short and fell to the Birds 7-6.

Game three of this series will be played tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. CT.
