Cards Drop Another to Padres
The Cards added two in the fifth on a Jim Edmonds' single that brought home Albert Pujols and Juan Encarnacion. The Padres took the lead for good in the seventh with two-run doubles by Josh Bard and Mike Cameron to make it 6-5. The four-run seventh inning was the last for Cards' ace Chris Carpenter, who gave up six runs on 12 hits and struck out six. Former Cardinal Woody Williams pitched six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out two, to earn the victory for San Diego.
Adrian Gonzalez singled in an insurance run in the eighth, and Trevor Hoffman closed the game for his Major League record-480th career save.
The Cards lead in the NL Central dropped to one and a half games because the Astros beat the Pirates, 7-3. St. Louis will try to end its losing streak in the finale of the series Wednesday night, when Cards' rookie Anthony Reyes pitches against Chris Young.
