Celebrate a Dry First Night
The annual First Night celebration is only a day away, but organizers have put in a month of work to ensure everything runs smoothly.
"The last week we've been working on this everyday," said First Night performer Pete Szkolka.
First Night's Entertainment Director Jane Accurso guarantees that a variety of musical groups will be playing to all types of tastes.
"Everything from polka to reggae to silent film," said Accurso.
First Night is going to be held at 15 different venues around Columbia. On January 31 more than 400 people will pack Windsor Auditorium and total attendance for the event is expected to top 12,000 people.According to organizers the crowds will be in a festive mood.
"A lot of people will be wearing fancy clothes, funny looking costumes, lighted hats the usual stuff," said sound crew member Brad Parker.
First night is a family oriented New Year's celebration that will be alcohol free, so everyone can bring in the New Year.
The festivities kick off at 5:00 p.m. in Stamper Commons.Tickets cost $8 if you buy in advance and $10 the day of the event.
