Child Dies in Accidental Shooting
COOPER COUNTY - A 33-month-old child died of a gunshot wound to the head in Cooper County Tuesday evening. The Cooper County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence near Otterville around 8:30 PM.
Investigators say the child gained access to his father's handgun and discharged a round from the gun, striking himself in the head. His father was home at the time of the shooting. The child was rushed to Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia and then transported by helicopter to the Womens and Childrens Hospital in Columbia, but died Tuesday night.
An autopsy was conducted Wednesday, and the results are consistent with the findings of an accidental shooting. The investigation remains open pending a final autopsy report.
