Children of wrong-way crash victim file wrongful death lawsuit
COLUMBIA - The children of a Columbia man killed in a wrong-way crash in October have filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
In the lawsuit, filed November 23, James Carter III and Ja'tahjia Collier allege Vanessa Beatty acted illegally when causing the crash that killed James Carter II. Columbia police said Beatty, who also died in the crash, was driving west in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near the West Boulevard exit when she hit Carter's vehicle nearly head-on.
The lawsuit further alleges Beatty, 28, was negligent in that she was driving too fast, failed to yield the right-of-way, went the wrong direction, and was intoxicated at the time of the crash. The suit calls for damages to compensate for Carter's death, as well as to pay for funeral and other expenses.
