Church vs. Super Bowl
"This mass is oriented to our high school youth, " said Father Mark Smith of the Newman Center.
About 3 years ago Father Mark Smith noticed that his evening Super Bowl Sunday Mass was dwindling.
"Our numbers were really low. We normally have five Masses a weekend, " said Father Smith.
His solution?Move the Mass before the big game.
"Somebody asked me jokingly last week when I was announcing it, 'How about the world series'," said Father Smith."No. It's not that we're just avoiding the game. It's something to help accommodate our teen programs."
And the pews were packed.
"By the time the service was over and everybody was ready to head out these doors. Those that were Super Bowl ready liked the idea of being able to come here first," said Jason Lamb
The church threw a Super Bowl bash in the backroom after Mass.
"I think it's really great that people can be able to give their time to the church and then also be able to go and party with their friends afterwards," said Kristen Blair a Super Bowl fan.
But the big question, which team got more prayers for a championship?
"I normally root for the underdog and I know that's the Seahawks," said Father Smith.
"I hope the Steelers win," said Blair.
About 250 people attended the Newman Center's pre-Super Bowl Mass today.
