City of Columbia Commits to Reduce Energy Use By 20 Percent by 2020
COLUMBIA- The City of Columbia will participate in a Department of Energy(DOE) leadership program, pledging to reduce energy use by 20 percent by 2020. The program, called Better Buildings Challenge, focuses on implementing innovative policies and building codes to further energy efficiency.
Columbia pledged to reduce energy use in 550,000 square feet of its public facilities by 20 percent as well as working with buildings in Columbia to achieve similar savings.
According to DOE, commercial building s and industrial plans in the United States account for 50 percent of the nation's primary energy use and produce 40 percent of the country's CO2 emissions.
