MOBERLY - The city has acquired what was formerly the Moberly Junior High School, and now is working to figure out the building's future.

Officials got the property through a purchase agreement with the Horizon Housing Foundation. The foundation acquired the building hoping to convert it into affordable housing for senior citizens.

The Moberly City Council approved a resolution to purchase the property at Monday's meeting.

The city is unsure of what they will do with the 90-year old building and citizens are divided.

"It's a grand building. It's beautiful," Moberly resident Tamara Snider said. "I was hoping the city would do something with it. It could maybe be a community center. Where the kids can come since we don't really know what's gonna happen with returning back to school."

Some feel the building should be torn down.

"Who is going to fund that? Is it a city thing?, local investment property owner Wade King said. "Is that a non-profit somewhere? And if it is a non-profit then there would be no property taxes being paid and how is that beneficial to the city?"

The city manager's office was not available for comment.
