CMU Women's Soccer Beats Columbia in 2OT
FAYETTE, MO -- Shawn Beard's rebound in the 116th minute of a Lindie Adair shot attempt gave Central Methodist University a 1-0 victory over Columbia College to open the 2012 women's soccer season for both teams. Tuesday night's game marked the first time in school history that the Columbia College women's soccer team played.
The Cougars and Eagles were evenly matched in the first half, logging five shots on goal between them. Both teams were still unable to put one in the back of the net, sending the contest into overtime.
The first ten minute overtime proved unsuccessful for either team, pushing them into another ten minute period. With just four and a half minutes remaining, Beard scored off a rebound just three yards out, ending the game.
Central Methodist goalkeeper Brittany Andert made 11 saves. Amber Petty took the loss in goal for the Cougars, posting two saves in 115 minutes of action.
Central Methodist's Kelsey Vanzant posted a team-high four shots. The Cougars' Natausha Sanchez led all players with six shots.
Central Methodist will travel to William Woods University on Wednesday, September 5 with Klckoff is set for 5 p.m. CT. The Cougar women return to the field on Friday, August 31st when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Grand View University. That game is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
