FAYETTE, MO -- After losing the first set, the College of Saint Mary rallied to defeat Central Methodist University in four sets in volleyball action Thursday night inside Puckett Field House. The Flames (11-15) defeated the Eagles (5-16) by scores of 26-28, 25-13, 25-21 and 25-22.

Central Methodist started strong and doubled up Saint Mary, 16-8, in the first set off one of Taylor Russell's match-high three service aces. The Eagles led 18-11 off a kill by Makenzie Shepard before the Flames mounted a comeback to tie the game at 24. However, three consecutive kills by Allie Slaton, Julia Weber and Shepard finished off the first set.

Saint Mary jumped out to a 10-4 advantage in the second set. The Eagles cut the deficit to 11 points, 23-12, off a kill by Shelby Rice, but an attack error by Central Methodist gave the visitors the set, tying the match.

The Green and Black trailed 24-17 in the third game before rattling on four straight points. A service ace by Russell trimmed the margin to 24-21, but a kill by Kaylee Wallace secured the third set for the Flames.

Central Methodist led 15-12 in the fourth set thanks to a kill by Rice. Saint Mary later took a three-point edge, 23-20, off an attack error. A Wallace kill and ball handling error by the Eagles ended the match and Central Methodist's rally.

Wallace recorded 19 kills and 14 digs to lead Saint Mary's offense. Joy Leick (11 kills, 18 digs) and Adrienne Mahoney (13 digs, 22 assists) also had double-doubles. Baylee Collins had 35 digs. Shelby Easley dished out 24 assists.

Weber posted nine kills, while Rice and Katie Dozier had eight apiece. Kristi Miller (19) was one of four Eagle players in double-figures in digs along with Rebecca Edwards (19), Jennifer Garrett (13) and Kylie Melkersman (10). Melkersman also had 17 assists, leading to a double-double night.

Russell and Hannah Babcock came up with eight digs. Russell added a team-high 20 assists.

Central Methodist returns to action in the Hannibal LaGrange Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Eagles battle the tournament-host Friday at 5 p.m. CT before taking on Culver-Stockton College at 7 p.m.
