Columbia Airport Seeks New Name

In October, a new airline brought new hope, but things still aren't looking up for the airport. December saw fewer than 700 people fly out of Columbia. It was the lowest total in the airport's history.

"Both the city and the airline. We really were anticipating having more success here," said Kathy Frerking, Columbia Regional Airport manager.

The airport advisory board is recommending the city rename the airport to something more communities can call their own. While the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce hopes industrial development can drive traffic up. Ideally, the chamber says a broader tax district could bring more support to industrial projects. That's if it happens at all.

"A lot of that land is within the Bonne Femme watershed, and it certainly is an environmentally sensitive area," Ashland City Administrator Ken Eftink said.

Time will tell whether the airport can be revived. And now with time on his hands, Roth is just waiting for passengers to come.
