Columbia, Boone County Voters Decide Issues

Voters will elect one new board member for the Boone County Fire Protection District and decide whether the district should enlarge the board to five members. Voter turnout in the county outside Columbia is expected to be higher than usual because of the fire protection district issues.

Boone County voters also will decide on a one-fifth cent sales tax increase for three years to pay for improving the courthouse.

"The proponents, I find, are more convincing than the one person whom I also know and like, I just don't happen to agree," said voter Betsey Winnacker. "I don't think his arguments hold water, so I trust it will pass. I think the need is sincere and strong."

Columbia's Second Ward is choosing between incombent Chris Janku and challenger Brian Toohey for its city council seat. The Sixth Ward will pick either Valerie Barns or Barbara Hoppe for its seat.

Voters have until 7 p.m. to cast ballots. We'll have complete results tonight on KOMU.com and on KOMU News at Ten.
