COLUMBIA - Several events took place Monday across town to honor the late Martin Luther King Jr. A community breakfast, NAACP motorcade, and church concert were just a few of the ways mid-Missourians celebrated the life of Dr. King.

Monday morning the St. Luke United Methodist Church hosted a free breakfast open to the public. The event's organizer, Almeta Crayton, told KOMU the "Poor People's Breakfast" is an event the group puts on every year because that is what Dr. King would have wanted. She said there used to be a fee for the meal, but now it is free of charge so everyone can attend.

At the MLK Memorial Park off Stadium Boulevard, the NAACP organized a motorcade through the city. The event began with a few remarks from community leaders such as Mayor Bob McDavid and NAACP Columbia chapter president Mary Ratliff.  One woman in attendance said this is something she does every year and wouldn't miss it for anything. The motorcade ended at the Second Missionary Baptist Church with song, prayer, and words of praise to King.

The 5th Street Christian Church held its first ever "Manifesting the Dream" MLK Day Event. One of the keynote speakers, Duane Crowley, spoke about his drug addiction, cancer battle, and time behind bars. Crowley believes King's message of hope helped him get through his difficult life. He said this message is an important one to remember. The event also featured a performance by SaltieMt5:13, better known as Brian Partridge, an ex-gang member turned Christian rapper.

The events continue this evening with the Annual Candlelight Walk and Celebration Service at Douglass High School at 6:30 pm.
