Columbia College softball wins twice, advances in AMC Tournament
CONWAY, Ark. - The sixth-seeded Columbia College softball team defeated second-seeded Williams Baptist College 4-3 and the top-seeded, No. 24-ranked Park University 7-0 at the American Midwest Conference softball tournament Thursday afternoon.
In the first game, Columbia fell behind Williams Baptist 3-0 after the top of the fifth, before rallying for four unanswered runs. The Cougars collected two runs in the bottom of the fifth as junior Carly Spalding drew a bases-loaded walk and freshman Molly Carter added an RBI single.
After three straight singles in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Allyson Metz hit a game-winning two-run double to end it. Junior pitcher Paxton Welch picked up her 14th win of the season, throwing a complete game allowing seven hits and four runs with four strikeouts.
The second game was scoreless until Olivia Denslow hit a two-run single for the Cougars in the top of the fourth. Carter and Metz struck for three RBIs in the fifth and Columbia added two more runs in the sixth to finish the scoring.
Welch threw her second complete game of the afternoon in the circle, allowing five hits and three walks en route to shutting out the Pirates.
With the victories, the Cougars advance to the AMC Championship Game on Friday at 2 p.m. CDT needing one win to secure the title.
Williams Baptist and Park play Friday at noon CDT with the winner advancing to play Columbia. If the Williams Baptist/Park winner defeats Columbia in Game 1, there will be an if-necessary, winner-take-all Game 2 for the conference championship.
