Columbia Cougars softball earns regular season conference title
COLUMBIA - Following a doubleheader home sweep of the No.22 Freed-Hardeman Lions, the No. 3 Columbia Cougars softball team became outright champions of the American Midwest Conference on Thursday.
The Cougars did not allow a run in either game, collecting 5-0 and 8-0 victories respectively against Freed-Hardeman.
Columbia starting pitchers Paxton Welch and Lauren McCroskie both tossed complete game shutouts, limiting Freed-Hardeman hitters to five hits on the day.
Alexandra Linck finished with three hits and drove in a team-leading four runs across both games. Linck was one of six Cougars position players to finish with a multi-hit day between both games of the doubleheader.
The pair of victories lifted the Cougars to a regular season finish of 38-5, helping the team to its 13th conference title in program history.
The Cougars will participate in the quarterfinals of the American Midwest Conference Championships next week. Columbia's first game of the tournament will be April 28 at the Antimi Softball Complex. The Cougars' next opponent is not yet determined.
