Columbia pastor announces candidacy for city council
COLUMBIA - Pastor Tom Leuther announced Tuesday his candidacy to represent Columbia's Third Ward on the City Council.
Leuther is the founder and pastor of Family Worship Center and Academy on East Bonne Femme Church Road.
Leuther will challenge Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala for his seat.
Leuther and Skala are the only candidates to announce their candidacy as of Tuesday night.
A resident of Columbia for 18 years, Leuther said Columbia needs someone that understands where we are and how we got here. "We need strong, pragmatic leadership to address the growing problems our community faces."
Leuther said his campaign will focus on public safety, public health, and jobs.
"Our first responders, fire fighters and police officers, are overworked and understaffed; impairing their response times and leaving our community at risk," Leuther said. "It is critical that this issue be addressed immediately-this is one of my top priorities and I am ready to serve."
Leuther serves on the board of Habitat for Humanity, the missionary board for Global Messenger Service, the Chamber of Commerce's Governmental Affairs Committee, Primrose Hill Teen Challenge, and has been active in serving the homeless population of Columbia.
Leuther and his wife Vicki have two children.
