COLUMBIA – Thursday is the last full day Columbia residents will be able to go out in public without a mask.

Residents could be fined $15 if they are not wearing a mask, or if their mask does not comply with the guidelines of the ordinance. Businesses who violate the requirements may be fined $100.

According to the city mask ordinance, a face mask:

  • Cannot have holes

  • Must cover the nose, mouth, and surrounding areas of the lower face

  • May be factory-made, handmade, or improvised from ordinary household materials

  • Cannot incorporate a one-way valve

The mask ordinance is drawing mixed emotions from Columbia residents. Cameron Kelly has lost multiple friends to COVID-19 and said wearing a mask is very important to the community.

“I know it’s uncomfortable for people, it’s uncomfortable for me as a chef,” Kelly said. “However, the safety of everyone else is way more important than my feelings about how hot I am in a mask.”

He said he hopes more people begin to wear masks with the new mask requirement.

“It’s literally to protect them as well as others,” he said. “If we can’t be a compassionate society then what are we doing.”

Eric Straatman works in Columbia and said he has never worn a mask and does not plan on starting any time soon.

“I’m not going to stop living my life over some virus that could or could not kill me. If I die, I die, it was my time to go,” Straatman said.

KOMU 8 called stores downtown to see which ones are selling masks. These businesses said they have masks in stock:

  • Aardvarx

  • The Alpine Shop

  • Breeze Boutique

  • Dungaree’s

  • Gliks

  • Maude Vintage

  • Poppy

  • Rally House

  • Tiger Spirit

Columbia’s mask ordinance starts Friday at 5 p.m. For the full ordinance, click here.
