Columbia Public School Discusses Budget Excess
The board has been hoping it might see this excess to combat more cuts from the state in the upcoming year.
The board's Chief Financial Officer, Linda Quinley, said that the board has been conservative and the state budget had more than expected.
Under the current budget the district would not only have an excess for the current school year but the 2010-2011 year as well. Quinley says this excess would be a safeguard in case the state makes more cuts.
Superintendent Chris Belcher says he is still not convinced the state will not make more cuts. Belcher said that if they do not need the excess money to compensate for cuts, they would need to meet and discuss where the money would go. But he did say teacher salaries have been frozen for a couple years now and they would look into raising them.
