COLUMBIA - This year, 704 Columbia students took the Advanced Placement exams, 28 more than last year. The tests are scored on a 1-5 scale, 5 being the highest score.  Eighty-five percent of students taking the tests earned college credit by scoring a three or above on the test.

Columbia students scored better in every subject area compared to the rest of the state.

The school district attributes the scores to student study habits and the teachers.

"Our teachers work very hard to understand the curriculum required in AP tests, they go to professional development about the scoring of AP exams," said Columbia Public Schools Chief Academic Officer Dr. Sally Lyon.

Dan Ware, a social studies teacher works at Rock Bridge. He prepares students for the U.S. History AP test.

"The kids are writing essays every week, they're doing a lot of peer work, so reading each others papers, giving each other feedback, talking to each other about their writing, We do practice with multiple choice items," said Ware.

This year, the number of students who got a perfect score on the exam increased by seven percent.
