Columbia's Downtown Named Historic District
When businesses removed their concrete canopies last summer, the demolition damaged several buildings along Broadway. Many stores in The District have already started restoring their buildings, but the federal designation may help motivate other owners.
"I think it's an opportunity for store and building owners to do something inviting, fresh, and yet bring back a bit of the historic feeling that downtown is capable of having," said Barbara McCormick, owner of Poppy's.
Tax breaks for building owners have restrictions, such as requiring any renovations to restore the building's historical integrity.
