COLUMBIA - Thousands came out to downtown Columbia tonight to ring in the new year.

The festival's events took place at the Missouri Theatre, the United Methodist Church and a block of 9th Street.

A light show finale rather than the usual firework display will end the night.

The change was due to safety concerns regarding construction on 9th Street.

Festival volunteer Tina Scott said she agreed with the city's decision to change the finale.

"Well I think that the fireworks were always great but with the construction going on I believe the city made the best choice," Scott said.

Scott said she has not heard any negative feedback about the finale change.

"None whatsoever, everybody is having a great time and everyone is really excited about the light show," Scott said.

People could enjoy many activities thoughout the night including choir concerts and craft stations.
