Columbia's Sidewalks in Need of Repair
$60 million dollars will go towards Columbia's cracked sidewalks and potholes. The improvements would take place over the next ten years. Alan Rainwater lives a few blocks from downtown, and he said some people who use wheelchairs are forced off the sidewalks because of the holes.
"There's people around town in wheelchairs who drive on the streets," commented Rainwater. "They refuse the sidewalks because they are so bad."
Not everyone is in favor of the sales tax. Grass Roots Organizing (GRO) criticizes all the sales tax propositions on the November ballot. GRO said the taxes are unfair to the poor.
Mayor Darwin Hindman says if propositions four and five pass, the city will phase in sidewalk changes over the next ten years.
