Columbia School Board Discusses Tax Levy Increase
COLUMBIA - The Columbia School Board will meet at 7 pm on Monday evening to discuss a possible tax levy increase. The tax hike would impact residents who own property in the Columbia School District.
In 2012 Columbia Public Schools are anticipating a $2 million decrease in total revenue, leading to job losses. The school board has already cut 13 full-time positions, but board members said they have added ten more full-time positions in other areas. Budget cuts are also leading to an increase in class sizes.
Columbia Superintendent Chris Belcher says he does not want anymore job losses and he says this is one of the main reason for the proposed tax increase.
The school board will discuss the tax levy increase, but they have not yet set a date to vote on the issue.
