Columbia veterans organizations warn about phone scam
COLUMBIA - Columbia veterans organizations are warning people Wednesday about a scammer asking for donations for homeless veterans.
Sarah Grim, CEO of Welcome Home Inc., said she got a call from someone around 10 a.m. saying the scammer targeted her 90-year-old neighbor.
Grim said the scammer calls himself "Steve." He calls from a blocked number and asks for a $25 donation to help homeless veterans. When the caller refuses to donate, she said he becomes more belligerent and is insistent on getting money.
"It sounds like he has a call list," said Grim. "He's using first names."
According to Grim, other local veterans groups, including one large organization, have getting calls about the scam.
Grim said the phone scam is similar to one the organization dealt with last year in which a caller from a listed number was trying to solicit donations for veterans. Grim said she worked with the police and the Better Business Bureau to trace that call back to a phone number in India.
