Columbia woman arrested after fire
COLUMBIA - Columbia police arrested Kayla Cook at University Hospital Friday, accusing her of three counts of felony endangering the welfare of a child, three counts of felony resisting arrest, felony arson and three counts of misdemeanor assault of a law enforcement officer.
Police were called to 3000 block of Green Ridge Road Thursday to check on the subject. Officers said when they arrived, Cook refused to open the door and cooperate.
Not long after, smoke detectors went off causing three children to exit the residence. Officers said they entered the home and discovered a fire in the basement.
Police said they believe Cook started the fire and when they tried to arrest her, she resisted and kicked an officer during a struggle.
The fire was put out before causing any damage to the residence.
