Committee Awarded for Removing Broadway Awnings
"The canopy has just reached the end of their time," said Carrie Gartner of the SBD. "A historical building is just so much prettier than the canopies."
The SBD also said there's no more money to maintain the awnings, although some people still like them.
"On the rainy days, I love the awnings," said Stephanie Thompson, who works downtown.
But, Thompson admitted the awnings should come down.
"They're just not good looking," she added. "They just look awful."
Boone County National Bank is among the businesses that are getting rid of the concrete canopies.
"Since we own those buildings, it seemed right that we would go ahead and take them down," said Mary Wilkerson of BCNB, "and do our part to beautify downtown Columbia."
Wilkerson says it will cost the bank money to remove its part of the canopy, but she said it's well worth it.
