COLUMBIA - A local business is offering families the chance to save money, make money and give back to the community.

Just Between Friends is the leading children's and maternity consignment event nationwide. Columbia's fall sale is happening Thursday through Saturday. It allows consignors to sell items they no longer need and shoppers to buy at a discounted price.

"It's beneficial to the community," said Casey Elliott, co-owner of Just Between Friends of Columbia. "Our prices are usually 50 to 90 percent off of retail, so you're going to find so much more at those prices that you can in retail."

This sale, Elliott and co-owner Nichole Clark are partnering with MU Children's Hospital to give all door admission proceeds to help families of patients. Just Between Friends of Columbia also supports City of Refuge and First Chance for Children.

"We also partner with local charities because the consignors can choose whether or not to donate their unsold items. So, we give those donated items to local charities too," she said. "It's really just an overall beneficial community event for whichever way you're participating in the sale."

This will be the duo's third sale in Columbia after purchasing it last year. The event happens twice a year: once in the spring and once in the fall. Michael Howard is both a consignor and shopper, and participates every year.

"It's a great organization because kids grow out of their clothes so fast and they cost so much money, and it's a great, cheap way to get nice clothes and also to get rid of and make a little money off the clothes you sell," she said.

Howard said she was selling and buying for her children years ago when Just Between Friends of Columbia was under a different ownership. She stopped participating once her children were grown, but now she sells and buys for her granddaughter.

"I just save the last season's clothes for the next sale and it works great," she said.

Howard encourages anyone with children to get involved.

"It's a great way to buy your kids' clothes, and sometimes you can get things that are completely brand new with tags on them... shirts for $1.50 and pants for $2.00. I mean, it's a really good deal," she said.
