Construction begins on senior and veteran home in Mexico
MEXICO-- The Harris Construction Company broke ground at the Berkshire Senior and Veterans housing complex Wednesday morning.
The project includes expansion and renovation of the apartments totaling $4.5 million.
Carla Potts, the deputy director of the North East Community Action Corporation, said, they are adding 18 new two-bedroom apartments and upgrading 11 one-bedroom units.
Potts said, "Five of the 29 units are going to be reserved for senior homeless veterans."
NECAC is working with Welcome Home, a veterans organization in Columbia in order to find referrals and get applications.
NECAC funded the project with a tax credit they were granted through the Missouri Housing Development.
Potts said she thinks the project will be completed in early fall of 2016.
