COLUMBIA - "Fire in the Sky," the city of Columbia's annual fireworks show and celebration, has relocated to Lucky's Market parking lot. For the past few years, MU's Peace Park and Flat Branch Park hosted the Fourth of July festivities. However, this year, construction around Peace Park forced organizers to hunt for a new location. Fire in the Sky event coordinator Karen Chandler said it was a scramble to find a new location because they needed a safe place to shoot off fireworks.

As in the past, Flat Branch Park will have children's activities and an entertainment stage with live music starting at 6:30 p.m. Across the street in the Lucky's Market parking lot, there will be a second stage with entertainment also starting at 6:30 p.m. The fireworks show begins at 9:15 p.m., launching from the field next to Lucky's. The grocery store will remain open until 7 p.m.

Chandler said she has been working with the annual Fire in the Sky event for about 12 years. "We're really happy to be able to provide this great community celebration on Independence day that's free and brings everyone together," she said.

Chandler also said parking is normally the chief concern. The city of Columbia and University of Missouri are teaming up by offering free parking in any of their parking lots or garages, unless the spots are marked closed or "permit required 24/7."

For those who want a good view of the fireworks, but don't want to go to the main event, DrinKraft, a new Columbia business, is hosting a free fireworks watch party on its deck.

"It's fun to be a part of a community on holidays, especially like Fourth of July. You know it's representing the founding of our country. It seems like it's something we should be doing socially with other people and getting a rooftop deck experience is a little different," DrinKraft co-owner Josh Wexler said.

DrinKraft opened its doors 5 weeks ago and is located in Columbia's arts district across from Cafe Berlin. Wexler said DrinKraft will be serving up a special Red, White and Blue drink for purchase to celebrate Independence day.

Street closures throughout the evening include:

Fourth Street from Locust St. to Cherry St. beginning at 1 p.m.

Beginning at 3 p.m.:

  • Locust St. will be closed westbound from Providence Rd. to Fifth St.
  • Second St. will be closed southeast bound to Providence Rd.
  • Cherry St. westbound from Providence Rd. will be closed to through traffic

Providence Rd. closes at 8:30 p.m. from Elm St. to Broadway until after the fireworks show has ended and the “all-clear” is given.
