Cougar Softball Falls to Warriors
PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL - In the second day of action at the NFCA Lead-Off Classic, the Cougar softball team fell to Webber International University 2-1 in their final pool play contest. Columbia, ranked No. 21 in the preseason NAIA top 25 poll, are 3-4 on the season.
The Cougars outhit the Warriors but weren't able to string their hits together, falling 2-1. All three runs were scored in the fourth inning, starting with Columbia. Morgan Bounds and Jessica Hardy logged back-to-back singles and after a pop out, Alex Ridenhour singled to load the bases. Karina Veit was hit by the pitch to give the Cougars the one run lead.
The run fueled the Warriors as they came out swinging in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Senior Jordan Crisp (2-2) struck out six and allowed five hits in the loss.
Ridenhour and Veit had two hits apiece.
Bracket play was scheduled to start this afternoon but due to inclement weather conditions all games have been postponed until Sunday. The Cougars will play St. Thomas University at 8 a.m. Columbia will play again at noon, with the opponent to be determined by the outcome of their 8 a.m. game. Should the Cougars prevail in that noon game, they would play in the silver bracket championship at 2 p.m.
