Cougar Softball Finishes Union Classic 2-2
JACKSON, TN - The Columbia College Cougar softball team had another tough day on the diamond at the Union University Softball Classic.
After splitting yesterday's games, the Cougars again earned a split today, defeating No. 24 St. Xavier (Ill.) University 6-3 and falling to Davenport (Mich.) University 10-9. The Cougars, ranked No. 21 in the NAIA preseason poll, move to 7-7 on the season.
Against the Cougars of St. Xavier, Jessica Hardy tied the game up at one with a solo homer in the second inning. St. Xavier responded with two runs in the top of the third and would hold a 3-1 lead until the fifth inning. After being hit by a pitch, Columbia's Chelsie Crain reached tied the game when she scored on a Marli Hayes double. With two runners on, Hardy hit her second home run of the contest to give Columbia a 5-3 lead. Crain topped it off with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth over the right field fence to give Columbia the 6-3 win.
Jordan Crisp (4-3) threw all seven innings, giving up three earned runs, six hits and eight walks while striking out six. Hardy finished with two runs on two hits and four RBIs.
Later, the Cougars trailed against Davenport 6-1 after five innings. But Columbia exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth on eight hits, highlighted by a two-run triple hit by Crain and a two-run single hit by Kristin Eiken. Davenport responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring four to take back the lead at 10-8. Columbia managed only one run in the seventh and dropped the game by a final of 10-9.
Taylor Richter went 3.1 innings, allowed nine hits, zero walks and two strikeouts. Maria Imhoff (0-2) relieved Richter in the fourth to take the loss. Imhoff allowed six hits, one walk and two earned runs with one strikeout. Crain finished the contest with four hits in four at-bats, one run and two RBIs.
The Cougars open up American Midwest Conference (AMC) action in their next outing when they travel to Walnut Ridge, Ark. on Wednesday, March 14. Columbia faces William Baptist College in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
