Cougars Defeat No. 15 Missouri Baptist
COLUMBIA -- The third-ranked Cougar volleyball team defeated visiting Missouri Baptist University 3-1 on Monday night in a match-up of the top two teams in the American Midwest Conference (AMC). Columbia won the match by scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-20. With the win, Columbia improves to 29-1 overall on the year and 14-0 in the AMC, including winning their 152nd consecutive regular season AMC contest. The Spartans, ranked No. 15 in the NAIA, drop to 28-2 and 12-2 in league play with the defeat, their second loss to the Cougars this season.
After cruising to a first set victory the Cougars struggled to find their stride in the second set and committed an uncharacteristic amount of errors, leading to the Spartan win. The second set loss fueled Columbia to come back and hit 0.435 in the third set and pound 14 kills in the fourth set to take the match.
The Cougars had a balanced offensive attack tonight with four players logging nine or more kills. Kahoriz Feliz led the charge with 13 kills on the night. Carol Berger chipped in 10 kills while Trinity Ojo and Brooke Simpson had nine apiece. Setter Paula Ferreira led all players with 45 assists. Elena Berroteran and Simpson notched 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Hannah Carey had a match-high 17 kills for the Spartans.
Earlier today Ferreira was named the AMC player of the week for the third time this season. Paula helped the Cougars to a 4-0 record last week, handing out 134 assists. She also added 20 kills, 23 digs, seven aces, six assist blocks and two solo blocks.
Tonight's match was also the PINK OUT match for Columbia as they raised money for Cancer Research. Through ticket, t-shirt and pumpkin sales plus general donations, the Cougars raised over $1,000. The money will go directly to the Columbia College Relay for Life Team and the American Cancer Society.
Columbia returns to the court on Friday, October 26th for a non-conference match-up with nationally ranked Grandview (Iowa) College. Match time is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
