Cougars Split in First Day of Union Tournament
JACKSON, TN -- In the first day of games in the Union University Tournament in Tennessee today, the Columbia Cougar softball team managed a 1-1 record, defeating Midway College 8-0 in six innings and falling to host Union University 5-1. Columbia is 6-6 on season.
In Columbia's first game of the day, the Cougars knocked off Midway by a score of 8-0, run ruling the Eagles in six innings. Columbia outhit their opponent 11-3, scoring one in the first, three in the second, two in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. Taylor Richter (3-1) scored the win for Columbia, allowing only three hits and striking out six batters.
The Cougars squared off against the No. 17 team in the NAIA's Top 25 Preseason Rating, Union University, in their 6 p.m. match-up. In the 7th inning, with Columbia trailing 5-0, Marli Hayes singled to centerfield, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Hardy and scored on another wild pitch. Hayes' run was all the offense the Cougars could muster, as they fell 5-1.
Jordan Crisp (3-3) recorded the loss for Columbia, giving up five hits and striking out four batters. Crisp was relieved by Maria Imhoff in the fifth inning, who allowed only two hits and struck out one Union batter. Marli Hayes was four-for-six on the day with two doubles and two runs scored. Morgan Bounds hit a solo homerun in the first game.
The Cougars are back in action Saturday, taking on St. Xavier University at 11:00 a.m. and Davenport University at 1:00 p.m.
