Council Votes to Fire Jefferson City Leader
JEFFERSON CITY - The Jefferson City Council voted Monday night to terminate city administrator Nathan Nickolaus' contract.
Mayor Eric Struemph made the motion to terminate Nickolaus at a closed session and the motion passed by a vote of 8 to 2.
Monday's meeting did not mark the first time the council has considered whether to discipline Nickolaus. In August 2012, the council considered action amid controversy over an email he sent.
The mayor's motion came after he and Nickolaus had a discussion about Nickolaus' performance.
City attorney Drew Hilpert was appointed to serve as interim city administrator, but will not be considered as a permanent hire. Hilpert will receive a 10 percent salary increase.
The city said it will establish a search committee to hire the next administrator. The finance director search will be suspended until a new administrator is hired.
