Crime Rates Up In Columbia From 2008 to 2009
COLUMBIA - There was in increase in both violent and property crimes. Some crime rates in Columbia dropped while others rose.
Burglaries decreased from 836 to 692. Columbia reported 147 auto thefts in 2008, and only 132 in 2009. Homicides were the only violent crime that dropped. There were 5 homicides in 2008 and 3 in 2009.
But other violent crimes rose. The number of robberies increased by 19 in 2009. Rape also jumped from 19 in 2008, to 32 in 2009. The biggest spike in Columbia crime rates was in the number of assaults, up from 225 to 309. Property crimes that increased include larceny, up 114, and arson, which increased by one.
