Curators End Meeting, Say Alden is Still Athletic Director
Sunday's meeting involved UM President Elson Floyd, MU Chancellor Brady Deaton, and curator Tom Atkins in person in Columbia, with the other curators meeting by conference call.
The new head basketball coach, Mike Anderson, met the media after the meeting in a live news conference.
Officials say they want the focus to stay on the new coach, but their closed-door meeting delayed Anderson's press conference. Speculation surrounded Sunday's emergency board meeting and Alden's future at Mizzou.
Alden has been MU's athletic director for eight years. During his tenure at MU, Alden hired former MU basketball coach Quin Snyder, and was a part of the controversy surrounding his departure.
He was also involved in projects such as the construction of Mizzou Arena and the hiring of football coach Gary Pinkel.
"I'm disheartened that there is so much question about other matters," Deaton said. "I mean, we're here to celebrate a great occasion, a successful search nationally for one of the top new minds in basketball in America today. That's what I'd like to see all the focus on."
But it was tough to keep that focus. Rumors about the future of Alden at Mizzou have grabed major media attention.
Fans like Paul Wissmann say with the rumors, they don't know what to think about next season.
"Just kind of see what he can do with what he's got," he said. "Second to last in the Big 12, there is really no where to go except up."
The sidewalks of campus are unusually empty this weekend as most MU students are on their first weekend of spring break.
