Day one wraps up in Brian Adkison trial in Livingston County
CHILLICOTHE - A jury trial began in Livingston County Monday for a Columbia man accused of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend. Brian Adkison is charged with kidnapping, domestic assault and violation of a protection order in Caldwell County. The case was moved to Livingston County on a change of venue request. The trial is scheduled to last three days.
After selecting a jury late Monday, both sides presented opening statements. When proceedings wrapped up for the day later Monday afternoon, the state had started calling witnesses. The trial was set to resume Tuesday morning.
Court documents say police responded to reports of a possible missing person June 15, 2013. The report says the victim left her residence to go for a run and walk her dog. The statement goes on to say Adkison then unlawfully took the victim without her consent while she was walking on Tom Creek Road in Caldwell County. It says she jumped out of the truck he was driving and he picked her up and put her back in the truck. It then says the victim found a screwdriver and stabbed Adkison in the neck.
In January, Adkison's Boone County case was declared a mistrial on two of the three counts he faced. In Boone County, Adkison was accused of rape, burglary and deviate sexual assault.
In addition to the charges in Caldwell and Boone counties, Adkison faces charges in four other Missouri counties after a string of alleged criminal activity in June 2013. Authorities believe Adkison kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, raped her and escaped from jail before fleeing to Ohio where was eventually captured and brought back to Missouri after serving some time in Ohio.
