Democrat Kander to challenge GOP US Sen. Blunt in Missouri
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander says he will challenge Republican U.S. Senator Roy Blunt in 2016.
Kander is the first Democrat to launch a challenge to Blunt. He announced his candidacy Thursday with a written statement and a video.
Kander was elected as secretary of state in 2012, and previously served four years in the Missouri House. He also served eight years in the Army, including duty in Afghanistan.
In his video announcement, the 33-year-old Kander criticized Blunt's long political career and said "it's time for a new generation of leaders." Kander also highlighted his military service.
Blunt won election to the U.S. Senate in 2010, after serving for 14 years in the U.S. House. He was Missouri's secretary of state from 1985 to 1993.
