Despite Overcrowding, No Escapes in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS - After a rash of jail escapes two years ago at the city jail in St. Louis, there have been none since. It isn't that the inmates aren't trying.
City operations director Eddie Roth told KMOX Radio that recent escape plans have been discovered and stopped.
Roth says inmates have tried a variety of means but have failed to get out. He says keeping them in check is made more difficult by the high inmate population and staff shortages.
Four escapes occurred in 2011.
Roth says nine additional workers are expected to be hired later this month and other vacancies will be filed in April. As for reducing the number of inmates - roughly 1,900 - Roth says swifter justice is needed. Most inmates are being held awaiting trial.
