Both teams traded runs in the first inning with RBI singles from Royals designated hitter Mike Sweeney and Tigers right fielder Magglio Ordonez. The Tigers would get more help from Ordonez with his two-run double in the third to give Detroit their first lead. Marcus Thames and Placido Polanco had solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to keep the Tigers ahead.

The Royals fueled a comeback, however, with David DeJesus homering in the fifth inning, and contributing to the four-run Royals sixth inning with an RBI single. The sixth inning was capped by a two-run Reggie Sanders double that put the Royals on top, 6-5.

The Tigers answered back with a Gary Sheffield double to score Polanco in the seventh, and Polanco won it in the eighth with a run-scoring single. Despite blowing the lead, Wilfredo Ledesma picked up the win for Detroit in relief of Mike Maroth. David Riske surrended the game-winning run in the eighth to take the loss. Todd Jones pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.

The Royals look to avoid the sweep Wednesday afternoon, sending staff ace Gil Meche to the hill against the Tigers' Jeremy Bonderman.
