Downtown businesses gear up for the school year
COLUMBIA - This weekend marks the start move-in week for many college students, and downtown businesses are excited to see the foot traffic.
During the summer months, many downtown stores don't see as much action, since many of their customers are away from Columbia for the summer.
Matt Rundle, an employee at Rally House in downtown Columbia, said students coming back means more than just an increase in foot traffic downtown. It also means the start of football season, parents visiting their students at school, and more.
"It's hiring a lot for football season and stuff like that, so we usually have a lot of people staffed. It's just generally more foot traffic, which obviously means more sales," Rundle said, "It's an exciting time, definitely."
In preparation for the influx of people downtown, the store usually makes more hires towards the end of summer.
