Downtown Sees Big Weekend from Sports
COLUMBIA - The lunch crowd may have been quiet Monday morning, but downtown restaurants looked quite a bit different on Saturday night.
McNally's Irish Pub exploded with cheers Saturday night after KU's final missed shot in its game against Mizzou. Even more people celebrated as the night went on.
As for Shakespeare's Pizza, the manager said it was one of the most exciting atmosphere's he's ever seen for a basketball game. And with a capacity of around 250 people, everybody was trying to get a glimpse of a TV during the game.
"A lot like a football Saturday in the fall," Shakespeare's Manager Eric Mericle said in response to what the atmosphere was like. "Especially with both teams being highly ranked and it being the last meeting in Columbia in the forseeable future between these two rivals, it gave the game an extra sense of intensity."
Shakespeare's did not tell KOMU 8 News how much money it made from Saturday night, but it did say it was very successful. Mericle points to the atmosphere of the MU-KU rivalry as to just one reason why the two teams need to keep playing each other.
