Dozens killed after truck drives through crowd in France
NICE, FRANCE - An estimated 84 are dead and 100 injured after a truck drove through a crowd in the French resort town of Nice Thursday, according to CNN.
Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native who spoke to the Associated Press near Nice's Promenade du Paillon, said that he saw a truck drive into the crowd and then witnessed the man emerge with a gun and start shooting.
"There was carnage on the road," Bouhlel said. "Bodies everywhere."
The crowd was in the streets celebrating Bastille Day, a French national holiday.
According to CNN, police and the person driving the truck exchanged gunfire. The identity of the person driving the truck was known to authorities for petty crimes, but not for jihadism or Islamic extremism, according to CNN.
French President Francois Hollande called the event a terror attack, according to CNN.
