Drivers Warned of Road Construction Starting in Mid-Missouri

COLUMBIA - The Missouri Department of Transportation begins a large amount of road work in mid-Missouri Monday. The department has 48 different maintenance and construction projects scheduled for the two-week span from July 16 to July 27.

MoDOT is mowing the grass along several highways, as well as closing several roads and highway lanes for construction. Construction of a new diamond interchange and southbound lanes on Highway 63 in Boone County will lead to periodic lane closures. The work zone begins just north of Route 163 and continues to Route H.

The Route 163 and Route AB crossovers north of the overpass construction will also be closed periodically. Route H will be closed at Highway 63 until the new interchange opens to traffic. According to a MoDOT media release, the Highway 63 project is scheduled for completion in late 2012.

Sidewalk construction begins along Route 163 this week. The construction will be between Business Loop 70 and Rogers Street in Columbia. The sidewalk project is scheduled to finish in September.

The Route 94 bridge over Eagle Creek in Callaway County closed Monday morning at 6 a.m. and will remain closed until late August. The bridge, just west of Portland, is being replaced as part of the Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program. MoDOT is urging drivers to find an alternate route around the bridge construction.

Crews are doing maintenance on the westbound lanes on I-70 between mile markers 153 and 154 on Tuesday. Workers will close one of the westbound lanes.

Workers in Camden County are continuing work on the Route 5 bridge over the Lake of the Ozarks at Hurricane Deck. MoDOT said much of the work taking place will not affect traffic, but occasional lane closures on the bridge are likely for the next few weeks.

MoDOT will also maintain stretches of road on Routes O, U and W between Highway 54 and the end of state maintenance. The crews will leave one lane open, and crews will flag traffic through the work area.

In Cole County, MoDOT workers are replacing the Route D bridge over Logan Creek in Lohman. The work is scheduled to begin this week. The Route D bridge will also be closed through late August.

Crews will make improvements at 12 intersections along an 8.5 mile stretch of Highway 54 to improve safety and traffic flow. Workers are creating acceleration and deceleration lanes, offset turn lanes, other lane changes and lighting. One lane in each direction of Route 54 will remain open. The west entrance to Monticello Road is scheduled to reopen this week, but the east entrance will close this week.
