Dry Weather, More Fires

This means residents need to be careful when they burn anything. The weather's making trees and grass especially dry this year, making the conditions perfect for wild fires.

There have been about ten cover fires the Boone County Fire Department has fought this week. John Timmermann's been fighting fires his whole life. He's been sent out to wild fires all over the United States but he's a Missouri native.

"I have seen fires burn as fast here as they'll burn anywhere in the country if conditions are right," Timmermann said.

He says this year wild fires could burn especially fast.

"We're behind on moisture. The fuels are all in a dried state right now," Timmerman said.

Even if we do get rain, the dead grass won't be able to soak it up.

"Until we get the new growth in the later spring months of April, May, we're gonna be battling wild fires this year," said Gale Blomenkamp of the Boone County Fire Department.

But it's hard to remember to wait when the temperatures are already getting warmer.

"People are wanting to clear their land off, and they're getting that spring fever type of feeling," Blomenkamp said.

Fire officials say wild grass, like the type that grows in fields and open spaces, is the most dangerous because of its length and dryness.

"I don't think people understand how fast these fires move, and how dry and tender this grass really is," Timmerman said.

Officials say now, more than ever, people need to remember to pay very close attention to the weather conditions.
